Go-karting

Go-karting in winter? Luckily York has an indoor karting arena where you can race in the dry and relative warmth. It's 10 practice laps and then a 25 lap race; it sounds a lot but you can get around the circuit in about 25 seconds. Dizzying perhaps: there are few hairpins and a long sweeping curve. Controlling the karts is quite a physically demanding experience: there's no power-assisted steering of course and every bump transmits itself all the way to your shoulders. And then there's the mysterious bruises on your back at the end of the race - how did they get there?
Eight IVCers turned up for the race, competing in two heats and two races for a large bottle of Charlemagne. It was fun and - dare I say it - fairly competitive. It's pretty difficult to overtake, there being only a few suitable spots. If only we'd exploded the fizz outside afterwards? Maybe next time - and there will be a next time - we will. There should be a race at Tockwith this year, held as an IVC event, so if you missed it this time you can have another crack when the weather warms up.
